The St. Clair County Child Abuse and Neglect Council’s annual Community Roofsit For Kids returns Sunday, when Q Country 107 morning host Matt Markham climbs onto the roof of the former Times Herald building in downtown Port Huron to spend the week living and broadcasting live from above the city while raising money for the organization.
Now in its 32nd year, Community Roofsit is the council’s largest fundraiser, providing up to 40% of its annual operating budget. The money helps support child abuse prevention education in local schools, forensic interviews for victims of child sexual abuse, victim advocacy and trauma-focused mental health therapy for children and their families.
The fundraiser kicks off with Sunday Funday from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, featuring free family activities including bounce houses, face painting, games, music, and hot dogs in the building’s parking lot at 911 Military Street. Following the event, Markham will head to the roof with assistance from the Port Huron Fire Department to begin the week-long fundraiser.
Executive Director Sherry Archibald said this year’s campaign is especially important after the council recently learned it will lose approximately $105,000 in federal funding beginning October 1 as part of nationwide cuts affecting Child Advocacy Centers.
Community Roofsit runs through Friday, Sept. 18.
